One of the best things about small town is that everything is nearby. Toss a university into the mix and you've got an enhanced offering of sports and art. Welcome to Mayville and its sister city Portland (North Dakota, not Oregon), which are just about halfway between Grand Forks and Fargo.

Mayville State University, whose Comets compete within the NAIA, is just a short walk from downtown. The school also has an active fine arts, music and theater scene. A few blocks away, take a dip in the cooling waters at Mayville Water Park before grabbing some food. Take your pick: La Cantina Mexican Cuisine, Paula's Steakhouse and Lounge or the Pizza Shop and Sports Bar. If it's something lighter you crave, grab a danish or donut at Soholt Bakery.

Then walk off that meal at Island Park and the Rainbow Garden and Sculpture Walk. Heros and Legends Sports Bar is a meeting place to talk about the game with friends. Delchar Theater awaits those who prefer buttered popcorn and the big screen.
