It’s home to Freedom Mine — the largest lignite coal mine in the United States and one of the largest in the world — and the Great Plains Synfuels Plant, one of the only commercial-scale coal gasification facilities in the United States. With the future Talon Metals processing site also underway, Beulah plays a central role in the state’s energy economy and the nation’s EV supply chain. But there’s more here than power. Start at the Mercer County Museum, where stories of early communities come to life — including settlers of German heritage from Odessa, Ukraine, along with Norwegian, Swedish, and Irish families who built a life on the prairie. From nearly every direction, you’ll see signs of Beulah’s powerful roots — active coal mines, power plants, and the Great Plains Synfuels Plant. Visitors can even arrange tours to get a closer look at how North Dakota helps power the nation.
