‘Confluence Discovery Day’

Explore the history, science, and natural wonders of northwestern North Dakota during “Confluence Discovery Day” on Saturday, Sept. 26, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. CT, at the Fort Buford State Historic Site and Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center, Williston. 

The free, family-friendly event features interactive exhibits, live demonstrations and hands-on activities that explore the people, places, and stories of the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence. Enjoy activities revolving around three themes:

Indigenous Lifeways and Early Exploration features atlatl throwing, primitive fire-making, Indigenous games, hide tanning, tipi demonstrations, hands-on artifacts, and other activities highlighting the region's earliest cultures and explorers.

Military and Frontier Fort Life offers opportunities to march like a frontier soldier, send messages with Morse code and signal flags, make adobe bricks, learn frontier laundry techniques, play historical games, explore cavalry equipment, and discover the history of the Buffalo Soldiers.

Science and Nature at the Confluence includes fossil displays, native wildlife exhibits, geology and STEM activities, plant and foraging demonstrations, and educational exhibits from community partners showcasing the region's ecology and natural resources.

This event is part of the ND250 commemoration celebrating our country’s 250th birthday.

The Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center and Fort Buford State Historic Site are managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
