The Timeless Traditions Workshop is back by popular demand! This hands-on, FREE one-hour program is held on the second Saturday of every month and is designed for children ages 8+ as well as beginner adults eager to explore the practical skills of the 19th-century frontier. Each session introduces a new skill or builds upon the previous month’s craft. Participants will learn the history behind the craft, observe a demonstration, and complete a small project using provided supplies. This month’s featured craft is Soapstone Carving (with Soap), inspired by the tradition of carving soft stone into decorative and functional objects. For centuries, cultures around the world, including Indigenous peoples of North America, have used soapstone to create sculptures, tools, and everyday items. Its soft texture made it easier to shape and carve using simple hand tools. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn about the history and tradition of soapstone carving before practicing basic carving techniques using bars of soap as a safe, beginner-friendly alternative. Participants will shape and decorate their own miniature sculptures to take home. Perfect for families and all skill levels, this program blends history, creativity, and hands-on learning. All materials are provided, and no prior experience is necessary. This free, family-friendly event is part of the ND250 commemoration celebrating our nation’s 250th birthday.
