Make a punched tin lantern

Visit the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center near Williston for Timeless Traditions: Punched Tin Lanterns on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2-3 p.m. The free program is open to ages 8 and up.

Made by carefully punching patterns into thin sheets of tin, these lanterns allowed candlelight to shine through the openings while creating beautiful patterns of light. Learn more about lighting challenges on the frontier, then create a punched tin lantern to take home.

Timeless Traditions is part of the ND250 commemoration celebrating our country’s 250th birthday.

Fort Buford State Historic Site and the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center are managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Both sites are open daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m. through Sept. 30. Beginning Oct. 1, Fort Buford will close for the season, and the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center hours will be Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and closed Sunday-Monday.
