The Sheyenne River Water Trail starts north of Lake Ashtabula at the Army Corps of Engineers Johnson Landing on the lake and continues through the lake. You portage around Baldhill Dam and then gets you back on the Sheyenne River. The trail has portages around Mill Dam in Valley City and various small dams. In Lisbon you get out at Sandager Park and put in below the Lisbon Dam. The trail ends at the east landing at the National Grassland. There are maps developed for the landing sites. Currently there are 4 launches in place and the trail increased to 199 miles. While instillation of new launches and signage is ongoing, the water trail is open available to the public.
Join in the Sheyenne RiverFest in August, the Sheyenne River Valley's largest watercraft festival that brings over 120 paddlers from more than four states to Valley City!
