Welk Homestead State Historic Site near Strasburg is hosting free family-friendly activities to promote learning and fun for adults and children. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Aug. 2, Blacksmith Demonstration, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Bob McCay and Rick Wengel will share their knowledge of blacksmithing and use of the coal forge.

Aug. 17, Watercolor En Plein Air, 1-4 p.m. Bring a friend and spend the afternoon learning the art of watercolor painting in nature with local artist Mike Taylor. All supplies are provided.

The Welk Homestead State Historic Site illustrates the history of agriculture in the early 20th century, German Russian culture and architecture, and the career of bandleader Lawrence Welk, who grew up on the farm. While at the site, take a selfie with the new Lawrence Welk statue.

The Welk Homestead, located at 845 88th St. SE, Strasburg, is a state historic site managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
