President Theodore Roosevelt designated this unique natural area in 1904 as "a big game preserve, refuge and breeding ground for wild animals and birds." Drive the four-mile auto tour through woodlands and prairies looking for the bison and elk herds. Visitors of all ages enjoy watching activities at the prairie dog town. More than 250 species of birds have been recorded at the Preserve. Many may be regularly seen while hiking the two-mile nature trail through prairies, wetlands and woodlands or the new 1/4-mile paved accessible trail. Climb the stairs to the top of White Horse Hill overlook for a panoramic view of the surrounding rolling hills and prairie stretching to the south. A variety of prairie flowers may be found blooming throughout the growing season supported by the deep-rooted native grasses that form the backbone of the prairie. The visitor center features exhibits on North Dakota's habitats and a nature store.
