An alternative to Interstate 94 between Mandan and Dickinson, this route offers a leisurely drive through lovely, rural countryside and leads through Mandan, Almont, New Salem, Glen Ullin, Hebron, Richardton and the Schnell Recreation Area, a 2,000-acre nature preserve located between Hebron and Richardton.

Before highways, there were trails across the country designated by color names. The Old Red Trail originally extended from Seattle to New York City. Eventually it became old Highway 10 from Seattle to Ludington, Mich. Today, this old route, once used by Custer on his westward march to Montana, runs parallel to Interstate 94. Travelers can slow down to enjoy small town amenities, local museums, events, lodging, eateries, arts and craft shops and auto services. Although Old Ten is a "blacktop," watch the map for the gravel section(s) of the route; between New Salem and Glen Ullin or on the Curlew Loop spur, en route to/from Almont. Enjoy pastoral scenery, wildlife, blue skies and a slow pace on the Old Red/Old Ten Scenic Byway.
