North American Bison Discovery Center

The North American Bison Discovery Center (formerly the National Buffalo Museum) is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to sharing the remarkable story of bison, the prairie, and the people connected to both. 

Through interactive and rotating exhibits, visitors can discover the natural history of North America’s largest land mammal, explore the deep cultural significance of bison, and learn how these powerful grazers help shape prairie ecosystems. You’ll also encounter one of the most dramatic conservation stories in North America: how American bison were pushed to the brink of extinction and how people are working today to restore bison populations and their ecological, cultural, and economic relationships with the land.

The Discovery Center aims to be a trusted resource for all things bison—from their history and biology to their role in healthy grasslands and the many approaches being used to restore them across North America.

And, yes, there are real bison! The Discovery Center maintains two bison herds on either side of Interstate 94, giving visitors the opportunity to see these remarkable animals for themselves.

Before you roam on, stop by The Store for unique bison-related gifts and merchandise. Visitors traveling by electric vehicle can also use the on-site Level 2, 32-amp charging station during regular business hours.
