Hughes Fine Arts Center
Complete with a performance hall, studios, and galleries, the Hughes Fine Arts Center is the only facility in the North Dakota State University System designed solely for study in the fine arts.
Erected in 1974 and named after UND benefactor Edmund A. Hughes, the building provides more than 35,000 square feet of space specially equipped for education in art, design, and music. Majors and non-majors alike benefit from the classrooms, labs, and studio workspaces dedicated to the Department's degree programs and Areas of Emphasis. Housing the Department of Art & Design as well as the Department of Music, the Hughes Fine Arts Center is also home to the Colonel Eugene E. Myers Art Gallery, featuring regional and national artwork alongside local shows by graduate and master students. With letterpress and printmaking workshops, ceramics, jewelry and metalsmithing, painting and drawing, photography, sculpture, and more, the building is equipped for extensive education in various mediums.
The music wing is complete with the Josephine Campbell Recital Hall, a 200-seat performance space featuring acoustically tuned amphitheater. With a design surrounding a generous stage with a nine-foot Imperial Bösendorfer Concert Grand piano, the hall houses a professional sound and lighting systems, prepared to host many recitals and concerts throughout the year. The Department of Music also maintains the Gordon Erickson Music Library within the Hughes Fine Arts Center, the most extensive music library in North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota. Containing over 15,000 audio recordings representing all styles and periods. sheet music, musicological resources, orchestral operatic scores, and more, students at the Hughes Fine Arts Center have access to choral, instrumental, and percussion rehearsal rooms, a piano lab, and smart classrooms.
Whether for a musical performance or to take in a gallery show, the Hughes Fine Arts Center is a space to visit while on campus at the University of North Dakota.
