Experience ND’s Musical Heritage
Get In Contact
The State Historical Society of North Dakota invites you to immerse yourself in the sounds and stories of North Dakota’s musical traditions at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum, Bismarck, during “Music at the Museum” on Monday, Feb. 16, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. This special event celebrates the instruments, musicians, and cultural influences that have shaped our state’s rich musical heritage.
Visitors will enjoy live performances and special presentations from North Dakota artists. John Andrus of the Bluegrass Association of North Dakota will share his passion for bluegrass music, followed by an open jam session where the public is invited to bring an acoustic instrument and join in, offering an opportunity to experience the energy and community of this beloved genre.
The day also features an engaging presentation by historian and apprentice luthier Markus Krueger, who will introduce the fascinating world of Hardanger fiddles. These ornately decorated Norwegian folk instruments traveled to North Dakota with immigrant families. Krueger will explain the history of these unique violins and demonstrate the craftsmanship behind their creation, highlighting why Fargo-Moorhead has become a hub for Hardanger fiddle making in the United States.
Throughout the museum, visitors can explore hands-on displays of historical instruments from the State Historical Society’s education collection, connecting past traditions with present-day artistry. Whether you’re a music enthusiast, a history lover, or simply curious, this event offers something for everyone—a celebration of sound, culture, and community.
