Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site near Fargo is hosting free family-friendly activities in August to promote learning and fun for adults and children.

Aug. 10, The Army and Alcohol, 2-3 p.m. John Beving explores the role of alcohol—legal and illegal—in the U.S. Army from 1858 to 1880, focusing on its impact on the lives and careers of officers and enlisted men.

Aug. 17, Artillery of the Civil War, 2-3 p.m. Join staff member Alan Fricker to learn about the types, tactics, and impact of artillery used during the Civil War.

Aug. 24, Ballads on the Prairie, 2-3 p.m. Tom Isern, distinguished professor of history at North Dakota State University, takes us on a musical journey through the prairie.

Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site, managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota, is located at 935 Broadway N., Abercrombie. Summer hours are daily, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., with guided tours available. Admission is $8 for adults and $3 for youth.
