The Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center near Williston is offering free educational activities in May to promote learning and fun for adults and children. Children must be accompanied by an adult. All sessions are free and open to the public.
May 3, Timeless Traditions: Frontier-Style Braided Rugs, 2-3 p.m. Learn how 19th-century families reused fabric scraps to create braided rugs, then make a rag rug coaster to take home. This hands-on, introductory level workshop for ages 8 and up combines history, crafting, and frontier ingenuity.
May 10, History & Nature Lecture: Contemporary History of Fort Buford, 2-3 p.m. Fort Buford was decommissioned in 1895, but its story continued. Join Jacqueline Lisenbee as she explores how the site was preserved, remembered, and reimagined from its closure to today in this special presentation on Fort Buford’s evolving legacy. The History & Nature lecture series is appropriate for adult audiences.
May 24, Confluence Learning Lab: Fishing at the Confluence, 2-3 p.m. Discover the history and biology of local fish found at the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence. Try catching a stuffed paddlefish, then design your own fish from clay while learning about different features fish have adapted to survive. This hands-on workshop for ages 8 and up connects history, biology, and crafting.

The Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center is part of Fort Buford State Historic Site managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. CT; and closed Sunday-Monday. Fort Buford is currently closed. Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center and Fort Buford will be open daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m., May 1-Sept. 30.
