Inaugural Oktoberfest Volksmarch
The Dakota Wanderers are hosting its inaugural Oktoberfest Volksmarch in Bismarck. What is a Volksmarch?
It's a non-competitive fitness walking event. Also termed volkswalk. In Germany, these events were originally termed Volkswanderung - "volkswandering." It evolved into Volksmarch in the United States. Volksmarches are typically 5K (3.1 miles) or 10K (6.2 miles) and provide people of all ages an adventure along scenic trails, rivers, historic sites and more.
The volksmarch will start in south Bismarck along the nature trail. It is $10 for adults and $5 for kids. The route will take you by riverfront views, historical sites, local landmarks and Native American cultural sites, while ending "on top of Bismarck" at the northern end. It provides a great way for friends and family to get together and enjoy some time outdoors.
Participants will meet at Bismarck Ale Works on 1100 Canada Ave. Registration will start at 8 a.m. Transportation will be provided to and from the volksmarch. There will be water along the route and even a souvenir stamp for those who'd like one (real serious volksmarchers). At the finish line, water and beverages are given out. T-shirts are part of the entry fee, so who wouldn't want to join?
This is part of the Bismarck Oktoberfest celebration at Bismarck Ale Works, which goes from 5 p.m. on Friday, September 28 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, September 29. There will be an official Oktoberfest ticketed dinner, kids' games, adult contests, live music, delicious food and a beer garden. Prost!
