The Former Governors' Mansion State Historic Site is offering free weekly activities throughout the summer season to promote learning and fun for adults and children. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Cookies and lemonade will be served.

June 18 Chalk Fest, 2-4 p.m. Spend the afternoon decorating our sidewalks with chalk art! Daycares and school groups are encouraged to attend.

June 20 It’s Summer Solstice, 2-4 p.m. Today is the first day of summer. Let’s celebrate the season and create art using shadows.

June 25 Light the Way, 2-4 p.m. Gas and candle lanterns lit the way for carriages. Look at early lanterns on exhibit in the carriage house and make your own paper lantern.

June 27 Water Games, 2-4 p.m. The cistern was used to hold water for the horses once stabled in the carriage house. Learn more about the cistern and play water games on the lawn of the Former Governors’ Mansion.

July 2 Canvases Around the Mansion, 2-4 p.m. The Former Governors’ Mansion walls have been adorned with canvas prints throughout the years. View the new artwork and paint a canvas for your own wall.

July 4 Watermelon and Music, 12-4 p.m. Bismarck musician Kris Kitko will perform an American folk and patriotic music sing-along, 2-3 p.m. Enjoy complimentary slices of watermelon and lemonade throughout the afternoon.

July 9 It’s a Puzzle, 2-4 p.m. Puzzles have been around since around 1885. They remain a great way to pass the time. Enjoy putting puzzles together, then design your own.

July 11 Step This Way! 2-4 p.m. Many gardens have stepping stones as a pathway or as decoration. Make a stepping stone to take home.

July 13 Fibers & Flavors, 1-4 p.m. Fiber craft enthusiasts, bring your crochet, knitting, or preferred fiber craft projects to work on in the ambiance of the Former Governors’ Mansion. Pink lemonade and cookies will be served.

July 16 Vroom, Vroom, 2-4 p.m. View the carriage on exhibit in the carriage house and discuss other vehicles used in the past. Then build and test a balloon car.

July 18 Dinosaur Day, 2-4 p.m. Paleontologists perform digs each year to discover the remains of dinosaurs that once roamed North Dakota. Dig for dinosaurs, make crafts, and participate in other dinosaur-themed stations.

July 23 Homemade Paper, 2-4 p.m. Recycling paper into homemade paper is a perfect summertime activity. Let's take it up a notch by adding seeds to make a beautiful flowering gift.

July 30 Bubbles, 2-4 p.m. Blowing bubbles is a great outdoor activity. Create your own personalized bubble wand.

The Former Governors’ Mansion, 320 East Ave. B, Bismarck, is managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Admission is free.
