Q: What was the name of Sakakawea’s baby? A: Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau. He was delivered by Captain Lewis on February 11, 1805.
Q: Did this young explorer contribute to the expedition? A: Yes. Captain Clark delighted in the child’s happy dancing and nicknamed him “Pomp.” “Pompey’s Pillar” in Montana was named in his honor. It is now a National Monument.
Q: Did Lewis and Clark leave any lasting marks on the trail? A: Yes, but only one. Captain Clark carved his name on Pompey’s Pillar July 25, 1806. It can still be seen today.
Q: Were there any pets on the expedition? A: Yes. Captain Lewis bought a Newfoundland dog for the trip and named it Seaman. He made the whole trip despite bad food, bugs and even being kidnapped once. (Captain Lewis immediately rescued him!)
Q: Did anyone on the trip get shot in the rear? A: Yes! Captain Lewis was accidentally shot in “the hinder part of the right thigh” while hunting elk.
