Categories: Historic Sites

The cairn is on the United States and Canadian Border, flanking each country's flagpole on the designated side. Hurriedly built in June, it was the only piece of construction for the July 14, 1932, dedication for a crowd over 50,000 in the time of the great depression.

The cairn was constructed by stonemasons William Paterson and son Edroy of Rugby, North Dakota from aboriginal hammerheads gathered by local children, whose donations of pennies and nickels helped pay for this monument. On top of the cairn, the globe of red granite with etched meridian lines were added on July 17, 1960, a gift from the Great Northern Railway Company of St. Paul Minnesota as memorial to its founder, Canadian born James J. Hill.
