How adventurous are you?
Outdoor recreation is legendary in North Dakota. The 96-mile Maah Daah Hey Trail winding through the North Dakota Badlands is a destination track for mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding. Lake Sakakawea on the Missouri River and Devils Lake cover more than 390,000 acres and have reputations for fantastic fishing. Waterways throughout the state offer opportunity for canoeing and kayaking.
Birding and wildlife viewing is synonymous with North Dakota. Here you'll find more wildlife refuges than any other state, 13 state parks and three national park sites with family friendly opportunities to enjoy nature. At Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Sullys Hill National Game Preserve and the National Buffalo Museum, visitors can truly experience buffalo roaming the prairie.
North Dakota also has more golf courses per capita than any other state. Some of the most recognized include Bully Pulpit at Medora, Hawktree at Bismarck, the Links of North Dakota near Williston and King's Walk at Grand Forks. Many other spectacular tracks, like Prairie West Golf Course at Mandan and Souris Valley in Minot, dot the landscape.
Summer and fall are picturesque times to enjoy 10 scenic byways and backways – showing visitors the diverse North Dakota topography: from buttes, Badlands and gorges to hills, prairies and forests. Fall in North Dakota is known as hunting haven – with hundreds of thousands of acres of available public land. When the snow falls there are new opportunities to get outdoors – four ski areas offer downhill skiing and countless miles of cross-country trails can be found in cities, recreation areas and state parks. There are also 3,900 miles of snowmobile trails.
