Grenora
WRITING ROCK STATE HISTORIC SITE
- The design on two granite bolders rocks are clearly American Indian, despite unfounded speculation attributing the origins of the “mysterious carvings” to Vikings, Chinese, or others. Thunderbirds, mythological creatures responsible for lightning and thunder, are central to stories told by Algonquian and Siouan-speaking tribes. Most of these artifacts on the northern plains date from A.D. 1000 to A.D. 1700.

MISSOURI – YELLOWSTONE CONFLUENCE INTERPRETIVE CENTER
- Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center tells the story of the confluence of these two mighty rivers, as well as provides the same magnificent view that Lewis and Clark Expedition members enjoyed when they visited in 1805 and 1806. FORT BUFORD STATE HISTORIC SITE
- Military post established at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers in 1866. Nez Perce Chief Joseph and Hunkpapa Sioux Sitting Bull were imprisoned here as well is the site of Sitting Bull’s surrender in July of 1881. http://history.nd.gov/historicsites/buford/index.html
FORT UNION TRADING POST NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
- The American Fur Company Fort, built near the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers, dominated the fur trade on the Upper Missouri River between 1829 and 1867. Indians and the fur traders peacefully co-existed before the great Indian wars. www.nps.gov/fous/

LEWIS AND CLARK TRAIL MUSEUM
- The largest museum in northwestern North Dakota. Eight display rooms featuring cars, machinery, homestead artifacts and a Lewis and Clark panorama. Gift shop.
Watford City
LONG X VISITOR CENTER AND MUSEUM
- The Long X Visitor Center and Museum is the central location for information on the area's cultural, geological, historical, and geographic attractions. The Pioneer Museum features a timeline of the history of the area and Grandma's Pantry and Books giftshop. www.4eyes.net

MCKENZIE COUNTY HERITAGE PARK
- Original trapper’s log cabin, homestead shack, one-room school and original 1915 Schafer Law Office. Mammoth fossil bones discovered in the area.

THEODORE ROOSEVELT NATIONAL PARK NORTH UNIT
- The North Unit has taller buttes and is heavily forested in places. The beauty draws visitors year-round for sweeping vistas of this designated wilderness. The 14-mile Scenic Byway in the North Unit provide easy access to popular vistas and wildlife viewing –you will always see buffalo herds and prairie dog towns, and you may catch a glimpse of wild horses, mule deer, elk and maybe even at coyote. Grassy Butte
OLD GRASSY BUTTE POST OFFICE
- National registered historic site built of logs and sod in 1912. Now serves as a unique museum housing exhibits from the 1800s and early 1900s.
LITTLE MISSOURI NATIONAL GRASSLANDS
- Largest and most diverse of the 19 grasslands found in the western United States covering more than 1 million acres, including both Theodore Roosevelt National Park units. The only stand of limber pine in the state is just north of Marrmath and the only natural Ponderosa Pine Forest in the state is located west of Amidon. www.fs.fed.us/r1/dakotaprairie/
Medora Area
Medora is the gateway to the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. This authentic Old West cow-town was founded in 1883 by the Marquis de Mores and named for his wife. Medora offers a musical extravaganza, trail rides, mountain biking, hiking, museums, many gift shops and restaurants are bustling during the summer season.

WHITE BUTTE
- North Dakota’s highest point at 3,506 feet. Permission to climb is preferred but hiking is allowed. Take care to leave area as is found.
Bowman
PIONEER TRAILS REGIONAL MUSEUM
- Known around the world for paleontology, genealogy field work and laboratory. Features exhibits on American Indian culture, other collections on regional history. The museum also studies, collects and curates fossils which include vertebrates, invertebrates and plants from 73 million year old marine deposits up to the latest deposits of the area, which are 28 million years old. Some of the animals that have been found are mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, dinosaurs, and early mammals that include camels, rhinoceroses, horses and giant pigs.
