History has eastern North Dakota as the “gateway” to the American west. The east holds the first United State military fort, the rise of the American Bonanza farms, railroads that carried the abundant wheat and grains across the nation from the rich farm land encompassing the Red River which flows north. Come and enjoy this region with its rich agriculture, history and technical tours, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

DAY 1

Wahpeton Area

BAGG BONANZA FARM


  • Located one mile off Interstate 29 and exit 23, this is America’s only intact bonanza farm. The 21-bedroom main house is fully restored and is a National Historical Landmark. http://www.wahpetonbreckenridgechamber.com
PRAIRIE ROSE CAROUSEL


  • Pick a horse of many colors or enjoy a bench, just make sure you take a ride on the restored 1926 Spillman Carousel. One of only 150 antique operating carousels left in the United States. http://www.wahpetonbreckenridgechamber.com
CHAHINKAPA ZOO

FORT ABERCROMBIE STATE HISTORIC SITE


  • Reconstructed fort and museum representing the first permanent United States military fort established in what was to become North Dakota.
