The eastern part of North Dakota encompasses rich farm lands, the Pembina Gorge, Tetrault Woods State Forest, the Sheyenne Valley National Grasslands and the Red River Valley. Each has its own natural beauty and nearby cities full of entertainment, shopping, antiquing, fine dining and special events throughout the year. Suggested itinerary for traveling on I-29 in North Dakota, then taking scenic highways and byways to finish out your vacation. 


Day 1

Wahpeton Area

Bagg Bonanza Farm

  • Located one mile off Interstate 29 and exit 23, this is America’s only intact bonanza farm. The 21-bedroom main house is fully restored and is a National Historical Landmark. http://www.wahpetonbreckenridgechamber.com
Prairie Rose Carousel

Chahinkapa Zoo

Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site

  • Reconstructed fort and museum representing the first permanent United States military fort established in what was to become North Dakota. Fargo-West Fargo Area

Fargo Theatre

Plains Art Museum

Heritage Hjemkomst Center

Bonanzaville

Red River Zoo

West Acres Shopping Center

  • West Acres offers more than 120 stores and restaurants and is newly renovated with a 750-seat food court with fireplace, a kids’ play area and the home to the Roger Maris Museum. http://www.westacres.com
Fargo Air Museum

  • Museum holds more than 20 civilian and military aircraft, along with numerous exhibits, artifacts, murals and gift shop. Always something new on display. http://fargoairmuseum.org
Scheels All Sports Store

  • Featuring 196,000 square feet over four acres of retail space on two levels with more than 85 specialty shops under one roof. The ultimate destination for athletes, fans and outdoor sport enthusiasts. Grand Forks Area

John D. Odegard School for Aerospace Sciences

North Dakota Museum of Art

Ralph Engelstad Arena and Betty Engelstad Sioux Center

  • $100 million facility is host to top-name entertainment, sporting events and concerts. It has a sports training and rehabilitation facility on location and tours are offered daily. http://theralph.com
Riverwalk Centre

King's Walk Golf Course

Pembina State Museum

  • Discover history from the Cretaceous Age to contemporary times within the permanent exhibit.   • Boyhood home of Carl Ben Eielson, “The Father of Alaskan Aviation.” The Queen Anne house tells the story of Eielson's life.

Barnes County Historical Museum

Historic Bridges Tour
