Marmarth Dig
Marmarth - Come Dig With Us in 2009

Sixty-five to 75 million year old fossil sites containing dinosaur and other fossils have recently been discovered the beautiful and rugged badlands near Marmarth, ND. The ND Geological Survey and the Marmarth Research Foundation, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service-Dakota Prairie Grasslands, will co-sponsor scientific, professionally-conducted fossil excavations at these sites.

Tour Availability: July 11-18, 2009

Length of Tour: Seven days/One Week

Estimated Price: $900 for the week/per person

Price Includes: Lodging in rustic railroad bunkhouse, transportation to and from dig site, breakfast, sack lunch, evening meal, bottled water and T-shirt.

  • Participants ages 14-17 must be accompanied by a paying adult.

Medora Dig
Medora - Come Dig with Us 2009

A 60 million year old fossil site containing crocodile, champsosaur (crocodile-like animal), turtle, and fish fossils has recently been discovered in the beautiful and rugged badlands near Medora, North Dakota. The North Dakota Geological Survey and Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation will co-sponsor a scientific, professionally conducted, fossil excavation at that site in June, 2009. Public participation is invited.

Tour Availability: June 15-20, 2009

Length of Tour: Per day or full week

Estimated Price: $145 per day per person
  • Family day: June 20 will be family day for children of any age accompanied by an adult: $30 per person for morning or afternoon dig.
Price Includes: Dig, transportation to and from the fossil site, breakfast, lunch, bottled water and t-shirt.

Paleontology Dig
Pioneer Trails Regional Museum - Paleontology Dig
Paleontology One Day Field Tour

Have you wondered what it is like to be paleontologist?  Ever wish you could collect fossils, maybe even a dinosaur?  Here's your chance!  Come and spend the day with our museum personnel as they search for and collect specimens and scientific data for the museum.  We are currently working on fossils ranging in age from 73 to 28 million years old.  Participants will have time for supervised collecting at certain sites during the day. (No personal collecting allowed)

Location: Bowman

Tour Availability: Tuesday - Saturday; June - August.

Length of Tour: 8 a.m.-4 p.m. in the field and at the museum.

Estimated Price: Adults $75; student (12-18) $50; Child (6-11) $25; Family groups may pay a group rate of $200

Price Includes: Instruction and hands-on activities.  Water will be provided in the field.

Other Info: You will drive your personal vehicle to the site area.  Please bring a lunch and beverage.  Sunscreen, insect repellant, hats, sunglasses, sturdy shoes or hiking boots are encouraged.  Please book 2 weeks in advance.  Lodging is available in Bowman.

Rhame Dig
Rhame - Come Dig With Us in 2009

About 65 million year old (Cretaceous age Hell Creek Formation) fossil sites containing Triceratops dinosaur, plant, and other fossils have recently been discovered the beautiful and rugged badlands near Rhame, ND. The ND Geological Survey and the Pioneer Trails Museum, in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, will co-sponsor scientific, professionally-conducted fossil excavations at these sites.

Location: Rhame

Tour Availability: June 21-26, 2009

Length of Tour: Seven day/One Week

Estimated Price: $600 for the week/per person

Price Includes: Dig, transportation to and from the fossil site, breakfast, lunch, bottled water and t-shirt.  Price does not include evening meals or lodging.  Lodging is available in nearby Bowman, ND.

Whiskey Creek (near Buffalo Gap) - Come Dig With Us in 2009

The North Dakota Geological Survey and the Marmarth Research Foundation, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service - Dakota Prairie Grasslands, will participate in scientific, professionally-conducted, fossil excavations at this site in August 2009. Public participation is welcome. Professionally conducted, fossil excavation at the site.

Location: Whiskey Creek, near Buffalo Gap

Tour Availability: August 8-15, 2009

Length of Tour: Per day or full week excursion

Estimated Price: $900 for the week/per person
