Basic Wheel Wright Class

An introduction to the repair and construction of wagon and buggy wheel.  Topics covered include construction of hubs, spoke, rims, tires and wheel assembly.

Tour Availability: By appointment.

Length of Tour: 3 days; 8-10 hours each day.

Estimated Price: $350

Price Includes: Books, supplies and noon meal.

Other Info: Each student will build a wheel which can be used for decoration, or on a wheelbarrow, as well as rebuilding a functional wheel.  Class size limited to 5 students.  Students should have some basic skills in wood/metal working and shop safety skills.

River Keepers
Canoeing, Cooking and Camping

Paddle from the Red's headwaters in Breckenridge, MN to historic Ft. Abercrombie.  Learn paddling and outdoor gourmet cooking skills from skilled outdoor women.  Camp 2 nights and learn about the Red River's history, geography and wildlife.

Length of Tour: Friday night - Saturday afternoon.

Estimated Price: $250; $100 deposit due in advance.

Price Includes: All necessary equipment except sleeping bags and your personal gear; all food and cooking equipment, paddling instruction, outdoor cooking instruction and river interpretation.

Other Info: The canoeing portion of the trip will be active, but not overly difficult.  No previous experience is needed to complete this trip.

Putting up the Harvest

Putting up the harvest - canning, freezing, preserving foods.  From late June through September, we harvest the food we've raised and preserve it for winter.  We'll share our know-how with hands-on learning, using the crop in season.  Among the food and methods: jelly and jams, canning fruit and tomatoes, canning pickles, freezing vegetables, making sauerkraut, butchering chickens.  We'll design a program based on your interests and what's in season.

Rural Living Systems

Learn about the systems that make rural living work: the garden, raising livestock, preserving food and butchering, the farm shop, wells and water systems, heating, the farm yard, electrical system, planning for winter, and more.  Depending on your interests and time, we'll design 1 or 2 hands-on activities.  We offer customized hands-on learning on the homestead arts.

Spinning Wool

We'll share with you our love of natural fibers.  The sheep on our farm provide the wool for spinning.  You'll learn to spin on a drop spindle made from simple materials, then learn to spin on the wheel made by Will Schill.  Learn the basics of using handspun wool.
