Special Olympics National Softball Tournament
More than 500 athletes, comprising 25 teams from across the United States and Canada, will converge on Bismarck-Mandan for the 2017 Special Olympics North America Softball Championship, August 18-20. This is the first time this event has been held in North Dakota.
A group of local volunteers has been working to make sure this event becomes an unforgettable experience for these athletes. We invite you and your staff (neighbors, friends, organizations, everyone) to be a part of this history, and ask you to Volunteer to Cheer. That's correct. It's the easiest volunteer job ever - just show up and yell. Many of these athletes will not have family or fans that are able to accompany them to Bismarck-Mandan, so we're relying on volunteers to fill the stands and cheer.
All the details are attached. Please feel free to share with your staff with an email, or just printing and posting the attached information would be appreciated.
Here are a few more details:
Athletes arrive and will experience the Walk of Champions at 8 am on Friday, August 18, at the Clem Kelley Softball Complex. (Think law enforcement, marching bands and cheering crowds welcoming the athletes as they arrive.) Competition will kick off on Friday, August 18, and will conclude on Sunday, August 20. Competition will occur from 8 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m. each day. All competition will take place at the Clem Kelley Softball Complex.
The Opening Ceremony takes place on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Bismarck Municipal Ballpark. The Opening Ceremony will include a parade of athletes, a performance by North Dakota's own Tigirlily and a fireworks show.
All events and the entire tournament are free and open to the public. There is no guarantee if or when this tournament will be back in North Dakota, making it a very rare opportunity to see the best softball players in Special Olympics compete.
