Buckstop Junction & Missouri Valley Historical Society Celebrate 20 years!

Print / Email

The 20th Anniversary year of the Missouri Valley Historical Society is well under way. Throughout the year we will be honoring the people who have built and supported our historic town.

The MVHS Annual meeting was held on May 21 and a new Board of Director member, Mike Knudson, was elected. At the June Board of Directors meeting Darrel Pittman was elected President, Judy Fried Vice President, Mike Booth continues as Treasurer and Vonnie Ereth as Secretary. Other members of the Board are Ike Aichele, Doug Alm, Mike Malarkey, Marlette Pittman, Larry Strand and Duane Jangula.

School tours have been given for over twelve hundred students and teachers. Guided tours are being held on Saturdays at 1:00 P.M. through August 11. The Visitor Center and Vintage Shoppe are open Saturdays Noon- 4:00 p.m.

Our Annual Old Settler's Day & Corn Feed Celebration will be held August 19, 2012. We're planning a great day for families and everyone interested in old time entertainment, food and fun.

Our current fund raising efforts to move the Brittin Grain Elevator to Buckstop Junction include a Raffle and a Silent Auction at our Old Settler's Day celebration. Raffle tickets are now for sale from Board members or at the Vintage Shoppe. Costs for the move of the elevator and the infrastructure that must be in place when the building arrives are rising.

We have roofs to replace and a lot of general repair that must be done to preserve our buildings. So far this year we have replaced the roof on the Sterling Train Depot and general repairs have begun. Through the year we will replace as many roofs, windows and structural elements as financially possible.

Weddings, receptions, reunions and other private events are being held at The Lewis Hotel Ballroom and the Bethel Church. This revenue source supports our preservation efforts and introduces many new people to our Historic Town.

Come out and visit us this summer and remember we always need your volunteer and financial support. Thank you for your interest in our historic buildings and their stories!
