An ode to Roger Maris

As Major League Baseball gets underway today - it's perfect timing for our tribute to baseball great Roger Maris. In 1961, Fargo's Roger Maris set a single-season home run record of 61 - a record that stood for 37 years.  Since then, Maris' 1961 record has been surpassed by Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire - all athletes who have been linked to, or admitted to, steroid use.  There's something to be said for Roger Maris who set that record on absolute athletic ability.  He is Legendary. Maris is honored at the Roger Maris Museum in the West Acres Shopping Center in Fargo.  This free attraction documents the remarkable career of Maris.  It is a must see for baseball fans - completely accessible every minute that the shopping mall is open. The Roger Maris Celebrity Golf Tournament is held annually in June, raising funds for the Roger Maris Cancer Center, Hospice, and other great causes.  In 2010, the tournament will take place June 26-28.  The registration form to participate is currently available online.  Nearly $1.5 million has been raised through the golf tournament.
