The United States women's hockey team with sisters Monique and Jocelyn Lamoureux from Grand Forks has begun its quest for Olympic gold. Team USA defeated Finland 3-1 in a preliminary round game in Sochi, Russia, on Saturday.
Each Lamoureux took two shots on goal but came away scoreless. Goalie Jessie Vetter made 14 saves for Team USA, which plays Switzerland before a showdown with bitter rival Canada next week. At this level, no one really looks past anyone, but it must be difficult to keep focus off the team you have brawled with twice in two years and who denied you a gold in the last Olympics.
Current UND players accounted for the lone Finnish goal as forward Susanna Tapani scored with an assist from Michelle Karvinen.
